Since 1894, the Schlossbergbahn has connected the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Kai with the plateau of the Schlossberg. The funicular railway overcomes about 109 meters in elevation over a distance of approximately 212 meters – with a gradient of up to 61 percent. Originally powered by water ballast, the railway has been modernized several times; the current panoramic cars with glass roofs have been in operation since 2004 and provide a view of the old town and the Mur during the short ride. The valley station is located directly at the Murradweg, and bicycles can be easily parked at the Kai – at the top, the Uhrturm, Glockenturm, the casemates, and several viewing terraces await. Those taking the uphill ride can leisurely walk back down to the city via the Kriegssteig or the paths through the Schlossberggarten.
