Lendplatz was historically the transshipment point of the right bank of the Mur: Here, the "Lände" ended, where goods were brought ashore from the Mur rafts – hence the name of the district Lend. For well over a hundred years, a market has been held in the square; the farmers' market, with its Styrian products ranging from vegetables to flowers to pumpkin seed oil, is one of the most popular in the city and takes place daily except Sunday. With the European Capital of Culture year 2003 and the construction of the Kunsthaus, the surrounding Lendviertel experienced a boom as a creative and trendy area: Today, cafés, restaurants, and small shops line the square, and in May, the festival "Lendwirbel" transforms the district into an open-air stage. The square is quickly accessible from the bike routes along the Mur and is an ideal spot for a market break.
