Augarten

The popular park by the Mur south of the center – featuring playgrounds, lawns, Augartenbucht, and direct access to the Murradweg.

History

The Augarten extends south of the old town on the left bank of the Mur and is the city's most popular summer park. The area of the former river floodplains was designed as a public park starting in the early 20th century; today, it features wide lawns, old trees, playgrounds, a skate park, and the Museum der Wahrnehmung (MUWA) in the former Tröpferlbad. In 2019, the Augartenbucht was opened: The renatured bank with shallow steps leading to the water makes the Mur directly accessible here for the first time and is densely populated on warm days. For cyclists, the Augarten is a central point: The Murradweg R2 runs right through it, and the Augartensteg bridge connects the districts of Jakomini and Gries. Anyone cycling through the city from north to south will almost inevitably pass by here.
